What is Bunafide?
Bunafide is a coffee brand that is gradually working towards a fairer coffee supply chain. We currently source our coffee from Dutch roasters with certifications like Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade. Our goal is to purchase directly from farmers in the future, allowing us to offer complete transparency regarding origin, price, and impact.
How do you work on transparency?
We show step by step how the price of coffee is built, from transport to what the farmer receives. We also publish our progress and challenges annually. Transparency trumps perfection.
Where does the name Bunafide come from?
The name is a combination of Buna (the Amharic word for coffee) and bona fide (Latin for "sincere" or "honest"). Together, they symbolize our core: honest, transparent coffee with a pure origin.
Where are you now in the growth plan?
We currently source from Dutch roasteries with quality marks like Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade. This is phase 1. As more people choose Bunafide, we'll invest in direct sourcing from farmers to make the supply chain fairer.
What makes your coffee different from other brands?
We don't promise perfection, but honesty. At Bunafide, everything revolves around insight into the supply chain, direct relationships with farmers, and continuous improvement. Every cup of coffee contributes to a more transparent and equitable coffee world.
What does your growth plan look like?
Our growth plan consists of five phases:
1. Start with certified roasteries
2. Select and support farmers yourself
3. Buy directly from the source
4. Making processes and packaging more sustainable
5. Long-term projects for farmers, villages and nature.
How do you guarantee fair prices for farmers?
We buy directly from farmers or cooperatives and negotiate with them directly. The price is open and fair, allowing farmers to invest in sustainability and growth.
What do the labels on your coffee mean?
Our current coffees carry certifications such as Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade, and Organic-EU. These guarantee good working conditions and environmentally responsible cultivation. This foundation is the foundation upon which we will continue to build towards full supply chain transparency.
Why do you say that coffee is “not an end point”?
Because fair coffee is a process, not a status. We openly share what we already know and what we're still learning. Every purchase brings us closer to a fair coffee chain.
How can I, as a customer, contribute to your mission?
By making conscious choices. Every purchase helps farmers receive better pay and increases our ability to achieve transparency. You are part of the change, not just a customer.
