We build transparency, not appearances
BUNAFIDE
Bunafide combines buna , the Amharic word for coffee, with bona fide, Latin for "sincere" or 'honest' , because that is what we stand for.
The road to fair-trade coffee
From a murky supply chain to a fairer process. Discover where we stand now and how we're growing together towards direct trade with farmers.
Don't make it prettier than it is, but better
The coffee chain today is anything but transparent.
Most farmers still don't get the price their work deserves. Large intermediaries squeeze margins, while the true value—the hard work in the fields—is barely rewarded.
As a consumer, it is almost impossible to know where your coffee comes from, who worked on it and what they get out of it.
We don't think that's fair. That's why we want to show that things can be done differently.
Step by step towards a fair coffee chain
We are still at the beginning of our journey.
We currently source our beans from two Dutch roasteries that adhere to strict sustainability standards. They carry certifications such as Rainforest Alliance , Fairtrade , Organic , and Climate Activator .
This means that the coffee you drink already contributes to better working conditions, fair trade, environmental protection and lower CO₂ emissions.
Yet we want to go further. Our goal is to buy directly from farmers, eliminating intermediaries. This way, we keep the supply chain shorter, more transparent, and fairer for everyone.
Fair trade coffee is not a claim, but a process
We consciously choose partners who work sustainably and responsibly, both in purchasing and in the roasting process.
The beans in our range all carry the Rainforest Alliance quality mark , which stands for respect for people and nature.
We also openly share what coffee costs, where it comes from and what could be improved.
We know there is always room for growth, but we are proud of the steps we have already taken.
Transparency, honesty and progress are the foundation of everything we do.
Together we improve the coffee chain
Change starts with small choices.
Every time you choose our coffee, you contribute to a fairer coffee chain.
With your purchase, you help farmers earn a better income and support projects that contribute to sustainable progress.
We invest a portion of our proceeds in research into the origins of our beans and in initiatives that gradually improve the supply chain. These include more sustainable cultivation methods, improved working conditions, and local projects that contribute to development in coffee regions.
Every cup of coffee brings us closer to our goal of buying directly from the farmer.
In this way, together we reduce the distance between the people who make coffee and the people who drink it.
We learn, improve and share
We know that a fair coffee chain takes time. That's why we take the time to get it right. At Bunafide, we openly share what we've already achieved and what we're still working on.
We partner with sustainable roasteries that adhere to strict certifications for fair trade and environmental protection. At the same time, we're exploring how we can source ever closer to the source, so the farmer ultimately benefits directly from your cup of coffee.
Every step we take makes the chain a little better. And we share those steps with you, because trust grows through honesty, not perfection.
