What does transparency mean at Bunafide?
Transparency sounds good, but what does it really mean? At Bunafide, it's not about perfect stories, but about insight. We show where our coffee comes from, how the supply chain works, and where we still want to improve.
What do we mean by transparency in coffee?
For us, transparency means that you can understand what is happening in the supply chain behind your cup of coffee. Not just in broad terms, but also in the choices that are made.
In the coffee world, this is not a given. Many brands share an origin or a story but provide little insight into how the supply chain actually works. How is coffee purchased? Which parties are involved? And how is the price structured?
For Bunafide, transparency means that we are open about this. That we show where our coffee comes from, how we currently work, and what steps we are taking towards more insight. Not only when things are going well, but especially when things are not yet fully clear.
Why transparency is necessary
The coffee chain is long and consists of multiple links, all of which influence the final product. In this chain, a lack of overview often arises.
Farmers do not always know what their coffee ultimately yields in the market. At the same time, consumers have little insight into how much of the price actually reaches the origin. This creates a situation where everyone knows part of the story, but no one sees the complete picture.
Without transparency, it remains difficult to make real choices. You can hardly judge whether coffee is fair if you don't know how the chain is structured. And you cannot improve the chain if it remains unclear where the problems lie.
Transparency is therefore not an extra layer on top of a product, but the basis for even being able to speak about fair coffee.
The origin of our coffee
We show you the countries and regions our coffee comes from and the route it takes to reach us. Where possible, we also share which partners we work with and how the coffee is produced. This gives you a clearer picture of its origin, rather than just a general indication of provenance.
Our procurement approach
We are transparent about how we purchase and through which links the coffee reaches us. This means we show which parties we collaborate with and how the chain is currently structured. Not just the end result, but also the journey to get there.
The steps we take
We share how we are working towards a shorter and fairer coffee chain. This means we provide insight into the choices we make, why we make them, and what the results are. Not everything changes at once, but every step is aimed at greater clarity and a better distribution.
Our progress
We show where we stand and how we are developing towards greater transparency. This means that we not only share successes, but also where we still need to make progress. In this way, it remains visible that transparency is not an endpoint, but a process.
What we can't fully show yet
Transparency also means being honest about the limits of what we currently know.
Currently, we still purchase through roasters and existing supply chains. This means we don't have complete insight into prices and margins at every level. For example, we don't yet know exactly what a farmer receives per specific batch and how that price develops throughout the entire chain.
This is not a conscious choice to hide information, but a consequence of how the current coffee world is structured. A lot of information is scattered across different parties and is not always directly accessible.
That's precisely why we think it's important to mention this. Not to pretend that everything is already transparent, but to show where the limits lie and where we still need to take steps.

We need your help
We don't build transparency alone. By making conscious choices and staying involved, you help make the coffee chain fairer and more transparent, one step at a time.
