What does fair trade coffee mean?

What does fair trade coffee mean?

Fair coffee sounds simple. You buy coffee, the farmer gets a good price, and everyone in the chain acts ethically.

But unfortunately, it's not that easy.

The coffee world is vast, complicated, and often opaque. Beans pass through many hands before they reach your cup. This makes it difficult to always see who earns what, where the coffee truly comes from, and how much impact your choice has.

At Bunafide, we want to be honest about that. We're not saying everything is perfect yet. But we are saying that coffee can be fairer. Step by step. With more transparency, better choices, and more attention to the people behind the bean.

Want to know how we view fair coffee? Then it starts here.

Why fair coffee isn't a simple claim

Many coffee brands use words like fair, sustainable, and responsible. That sounds good, but it doesn't always say enough.

Because what exactly does fair mean?

Is it about the price for the farmer? Organic farming? Better working conditions? Fewer intermediaries? Transparency about costs? Or all of the above?

Fair coffee isn't just a sticker you can slap on a package. It's a way of working. And most importantly: a process that needs continuous improvement.

That's why we believe it's important not to sugarcoat things. For us, fair coffee doesn't mean the entire chain will be solved tomorrow. It means knowing where you stand, sharing what you know, and working on what can be improved.

What makes coffee fairer?

There are a few components that determine if coffee becomes fairer. No single thing makes the difference. It's about the bigger picture.

Origin

Fair coffee starts with origin. Where does the coffee come from? Which country, which region, or from which farmer or cooperative?

The more you know about the origin, the better you can understand who is behind the coffee. That makes coffee less anonymous. And that's necessary, because behind every bean there's work. A lot of work.

Price

An important part of fair coffee is the price farmers receive. In the traditional coffee chain, too little often remains for the people who do most of the work.

When coffee farmers are paid more fairly, it creates opportunities. For better maintenance of the plantation. For education. For families. For the future.

That's why paying coffee farmers fairly is at the core of fair coffee.

Transparency

Without openness, fairness remains vague.

Transparency means showing what you know. Where coffee comes from. What steps are in the chain. What choices you make. And also: what you don't know yet.

At Bunafide, we believe that trust starts with clarity. That's why we are working towards increasing transparency in coffee.

Quality

Fair coffee should also simply taste good. Otherwise, it remains just a good story.

Quality is important because it adds value to the chain. Good coffee can cost something. Not because it has to be expensive, but because there are people, knowledge, and attention behind it.

Improvement

Fair coffee is not an endpoint. It is a direction.

You can make better choices today than yesterday. You can gain more insight step by step. You can strengthen relationships with farmers. You can communicate more fairly with customers.

That's exactly how we see it.

Transparency starts with knowing where coffee comes from

If you don't know where coffee comes from, you can't properly assess how fair the chain is.

A lot of coffee is sold as a blend. That doesn't have to be a bad thing. But it sometimes makes the origin less clear. Single origin coffee is often easier to trace, as the coffee comes from one country, region, or specific origin.

However, even single origin is not an automatic guarantee of fairness. Origin is important, but it's only the beginning.

The real question is: what else do you know after that?

Who grew the coffee? What price was paid? How many intermediaries are there? How is quality determined? What agreements have been made?

At Bunafide, we want to provide more and more insight into this. Not with grand words, but with clear steps.

Why the price for coffee farmers is important

Coffee doesn't start in the supermarket, webshop, or coffee machine. Coffee starts with farmers.

They plant, care for, harvest, dry, and process the beans. This requires knowledge, time, and a lot of manual labor. Yet, they are often the ones who earn the least in the chain.

That's wrong.

A fairer price doesn't just mean more income. It also means more security. Farmers can invest in better quality, more sustainable cultivation, and their own community.

That's why the price for coffee farmers is so important. Not as a separate detail, but as a foundation for a better coffee chain.

Sustainable coffee goes beyond a certification mark

Certification marks can help. They provide direction and set requirements for production, environment, or working conditions. That's valuable.

But a certification mark doesn't always tell the whole story.

Sustainable coffee is also about openness. About relationships. About price. About whether farmers truly benefit from the chain they work in.

That's why we look beyond just the label. A certification mark can be a good step, but transparency and direct improvement remain necessary.

So, if you're looking for sustainable coffee, it's perfectly fine to be critical. Don't just ask what certification mark it has, but also what else a brand shares.

How Bunafide views fair coffee

At Bunafide, we believe that fair coffee begins with honest communication.

Not pretending everything is already perfect. Not talking in empty claims. But showing the choices we make and what we're working towards.

Where we stand now

Currently, we work with coffees purchased through Dutch roasters. In doing so, we look at quality, certification marks, and conscious choices in the assortment.

That's a start. Not the end point yet.

We want to be honest about that phase. We don't yet have complete control over every part of the chain. And precisely for that reason, we believe it's important to be transparent about what we can and cannot yet show.

What we are working towards

Our ambition is clear: more direct sourcing, more insight into prices, and more connection with the farmers behind the coffee.

The more people choose Bunafide, the more room there will be to take those steps. Think of more direct relationships with farmers or cooperatives, better traceability, and more openness about costs and impact.

We won't do it all at once. But we will do it consciously.

Why we remain open about the process

We don't believe in perfect pitches. We believe in progress.

That's why we prefer to say: we are on our way.

Every step towards more insight makes the chain a little less unclear. Every conscious choice helps. And every cup of coffee can contribute to a movement where taste and fairness come closer together.

Buying conscious coffee: what to look for?

Do you want to buy coffee more consciously yourself? Then there are a few things you can pay attention to.

First, look at the origin. Is it clearly stated where the coffee comes from?

Then, look at the information the brand shares. Is it only about taste, or also about the chain?

Also pay attention to certification marks, but don't see them as the complete answer. They can be valuable, but transparency goes further.

And choose coffee that suits your drinking style. Because conscious coffee should also be practical. If you drink coffee every day, it should taste good and fit well with your routine.

For example, check out our Bunafide coffee beans if you want to make a conscious choice without complicated fuss.

Which coffee suits you?

Fair coffee doesn't have to be difficult. You can just start with a coffee that suits you.

For example, Straight Up is a no-nonsense coffee for every day. No fuss, just beans.

If you want a coffee with more depth and balance, then Super Nova is a good fit. A blend with a full, round flavor and a bright character.

If you're looking for something fruitier and more pronounced, Lush Bloom is a beautiful choice. Floral, fruity, and just a little different.

The most important thing isn't to do everything perfectly right away. The most important thing is to choose more consciously. Curious which coffee suits you best? Then check out our coffee selection guide.

What can you do as a coffee drinker?

As a coffee drinker, you have more influence than you might think.

Every purchase guides the chain a little. If you only choose by price, cheap production often remains the standard. If you choose more consciously, there's room for better alternatives.

That doesn't mean you have to know everything. Or that you can never drink regular coffee again.

It does mean you can ask questions. Where does my coffee come from? Who benefits from it? What does this brand actually share about the chain?

These questions make coffee better. Not in one day, but step by step.

Fair coffee is a step forward

Fair coffee is not an endpoint. It's a movement.

For Bunafide, it means: being open about origin, remaining critical of the chain, and working towards a more direct connection between farmer and drinker.

We are not where we want to be yet. But we are on our way.

And we find that more honest than pretending everything is already perfect.

Do you want to choose coffee more consciously? Then start with coffee that is clear about taste, origin, and intent. Check out our fair coffee and discover how we are working step by step towards a better coffee chain.
